The Great Sport that is Fading Away into the Depths of Corruption

Boxing. From all-time greats in Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, and Mike Tyson, to today’s icons in Andre Ward, Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez, and Floyd Mayweather, boxing has resonated with fans of many generations. The sad truth is that this beloved sport has been headed down the dark path of corruption for the past few years. Saturday, September 16th 2017, was the day that even the casual fan took notice of this disgusting virus infecting the sport. It was the night of much anticipated Canelo Alvarez and GGG fight and most longtime boxing fans that were offended by the Mayweather v. McGregor money fight, were looking forward the real fight of the year. To be fair, the fight itself was an entertaining contest that was worth the price of admission, but what came after it is what put the final nail in boxing’s coffin. The unanimous decision amongst both fans and the media were that it was a very close contest that would end with the advantage going to GGG. After a bit of a wait, the judges’ scorecards were finally announced… Don Trella scored it 114-114, Dave Moretti had it 115-113 GGG, and Adalaide Byrd scored it 118-110 Canelo. The fight was called a draw, which caused the boxing world to freeze of shock and took to various social media outlets to show their anger. Even ESPN boxing analyst, Teddy Atlas lost his temper on SportsCenter, which represented the whole of the boxing community. How will this great sport bounce back from controversy like this? That’s the question the boxing world waits to see answered.
