Wow, what an event. UFC 217 definitely lived up to the hyped and probably exceeded such as well. Let’s look at the results for the three main event fights.
Rose Namajunas def. Joanna Jedrzejczyk (c) via TKO (first-round stoppage)
In what was probably the biggest shock of the night, the unstoppable Joanna Jedrzejczyk was finally defeated at the hands of now household name Rose Namajunas. Just as Joanna was building some momentum, bang! Namajunas knocked Jedrzejczyk on the ground and got the TKO victory. Namajunas will look to continue this momentum and defend her new championship for the years to come.
TJ Dillashaw (c) def. Cody Garbrandt via TKO (second-round stoppage)
In another surprising turn of events, the former undefeated “new young face” of the UFC Bantamweight division, Cody Garbrandt was defeated via TKO by the former champ himself, TJ Dillashaw. Dillashaw faced a rough 2016 after losing a split decision contest and his UFC Bantamweight title to Dominick Cruz. Instead of fleeing away from the octagon and losing his fighting “mojo”, he came back to win his last 2 contests to get back into title contention. He managed to best the great Cody Garbrandt and is looking to keep his title for good.
Georges St-Pierre (c) def. Michael Bisping via submission (third round)
This main event left many (including myself) extremely surprised. The once-retired Georges St-Pierre managed to pull this one out via submission in the third round against Michael Bisping, which went against not only my fight prediction, but that of the majority of experts. He showed the world that he still has skill and is looking to continue his well-known dominant form for the foreseeable future. We may be entertained to potential superfights, in the near future, if GSP continues winning fights.
